Marmite, the essence of Britishness

27 Feb 2002, Seamus Waldron

The savoury spread Marmite was the subject of a Commons motion.

Former sports minister Tony Banks said that 2002 marked the 100th anniversary of its creation. His motion said: "We take intense satisfaction from the essential Britishness of the product and its lack of appeal for the majority of the world's population."

Also, thanks to a Reuters [here], this site is spreading the word of Marmite to literally thousands of new site visitors as the article is published around the world.

To quote from the article; "The Marmite debate may not be given parliamentary time, but the debate rages on the Internet on websites such as www.ihatemarmite.com" - Wayhay!!

Marmite in it's true and best form (UK style) is imported and available in Australia under the name "Our Mate". Sanitarium produce a goo called Marmite out here and it is a lame product in comparison! Long live Our Mate!

After moving to Australia 9 years ago it was very difficult to find shops that sell proper marmite like we used to have. Everytime a relative comes out to visit we make them fill their hand luggage with marmite. It is the best invention in the world. I love marmite! I eat marmite on everything. Porridge with marmite instead of syrup. Cornflakes. Ice cream with marmite topping. I cant live without marmite and I want to be burried with a jar of it to take to the next life.

My cat loves marmite - I discovered this a few years ago when he started 'shouting' at me as I trying to eat my marmite on toast, I had to share it with him to get him to leave me alone. He's older now and has some health problems so he has to have a pill twice a day and this will be for the rest of his life. I wasn't looking forward to the twice daily ritual of trying to catch him, holding on to him whilst a prised his jaws open and shoved the pill in his mouth (and yes, I tried putting the pill in his food but he managed to lick the bowl clean and leave the stupid pill behind) So I began to try and think of a way I could disguise the pill so that he would just eat it but it had to be something that would stick to the pill. Then it came to me, it had to be Marmite. I coated the pill in Marmite and just held it out to Houston (for tis said cat's name) and he swallowed the disguised pill with relish. It's fantastic; no drama two times a day; he doesn't hate me and he thinks I'm giving him a treat; bargain! BUT: I have been trying to find out if it's ok to give cats Marmite; what if my novel solution is in fact doing my cat more harm than good? Does anyone know? I could ask my vet, but he'll probably charge me £50 for the answer

Marmite rules! Although it is hard to get my hands on here in Sweden (as there is only one shop that sells it - "the English shop") I find that it's worth all the bother in the end. I have yet to find a single Swede who can stand the taste of it - even in very small quantities. I’m half part English - the obvious reason why I enjoy it so.

I am recently returned (to Baltimore, MD) from a wonderful and rewarding trip to the UK, to visit my sister. She happens to be a totally pro Marmite individual. Well, of course, soon after arriving there the discussion of Marmite was broached, by my brother-in-law, a definite anti Marmite individual, about whether I too, like my sister, was going to eat “that crank case sludge" (as he calls it) or not. Needless to say, as I am writing this comment on this site, I ate Marmite for the first time at a hotel in which I was staying in London, when my sis and bro-in-law visited me. I did also 'pinch' a couple of the tiny round pots of the stuff for later use. I did also collect a few more of those tiny pots from other places as well, also for use later. I even smuggled several of those little pots back to the USA. (No customs questions were asked about Marmite directly, so I didn't mention them to the customs police.) So, anyway, I was able to have Marmite on my breakfast toast (I am just starting out, you know) several times since returning to Baltimore, MD. As it turns out, I seem to have … well … developed … y’know … something of a … y’see … a dependence on the brown goo. And I can’t find a supplier, er, retailer of the stuff on this side of the pond. It is, awfully, a long trek to Canada to get it. And the mail order houses charge such unreasonable prices and tack on shipping and handling and the time waiting for it to arrive and … and … Can someone – please - tell me if anybody has Marmite, and will they sell it to me here in Baltimore, MD?

I wish to print out the Marmite label, and frame it, to hang up in my kitchen! Where can I get the 'logo-label" from?

Being a Brit I've loved Marmite all my life. Recently i discovered that some symptom my body was showing could be due to shortage of folic acid and Vit. B12. Being nearly 70 I forget which bit of my body was drifting off course this time. Oh, yes - restless legs. Checking the label of my neglected Marmite jar I found them both. Not my legs, of course. I know where they are because I have to crawl down them to get to my feet. It's a bit early to be sure it will work but who cares? Marmite! Yum-yum!
