Prisoners turn to Marmite moonshine
07 Jan 2005, Seamus Waldron
You search the web time and again, but still you miss the most amazing things. In 2002, the centennial year of Marmite, it was discovered that inmates at a jail near Wolverhampton in England, were brewing their own "hooch" using Marmite.
Governor Mike Pascoe was philosophical in saying that her preferred illicit brewing if it meant fewer drugs getting into the prison. Of course, it begs the question, "How was the Marmite [probably in large quantities] smuggles into the jail?” Mr. Pascoe said fruit and vegetables stolen from the prison kitchen were used in the brewing process, but inmates used Marmite because its yeast content aids the fermenting process.

to the one that said YEUK, to Vegemite, I stick my tongue out in your general direction and give you a big Vegemite Raspberry..... :-P
that said, I know this is the Marmite Site, not the other one, I just wanted it said that as an Aussie who grew up on Vegemite and who loves it to the point that a day is not complete unless started with Vegemite, Marmite is by far the best and ONLY substitute for me when Vegemite is not Available, I don't know why the others are so bad, but who needs to fuss when we can both enjoy Marmite, from the UK to Australia and even New Zealand. Damn we're good :D

Oh, I forgot - a quick easy recipe! Store bought flaky pastry and marmite. Roll out the pastry until 1/4 inch thick. Smear all over with a large tablespoon of Manna from heaven - Marmite. Roll up into a log (like a swiss roll) cut into biscuit shapes and roll these out slightly just to set them in a nice biscuit shape. Bake in a hot oven (as per pack instructions for the pastry) until risen and golden. As an optional extra you could sprinkle with grated parmisan before putting in the oven which is great but I prefer the hardcore origional version. These believe me will be fought over by your family and friends so i tend to make a double batch and eat them all on my own hiding upstairs.

Extra thick hand sliced wholemeal toast, loads of real farmhouse butter (I agree - margerine should be banned by the world health organisation) and too much Marmite smeared all over - the stuff of dreams and surely what the bible meant when it described manna from heaven. Both of my boys have been raised on marmite on toast and are as fit as mountain goats. Bovril used to come nearly close until it became all girly and took all of the beef (literaly!) to please the politicaly correct brigade.

well G'day, I also wonder if the recipe they used is available for us, I mean lets face it with this age of uncertain fuel costs, everything is going up, so something to help us with home made things is a good thing right? and if it's made with marmite how can it be bad? :D
I do need to add that as an Aussie, I prefer Vegemite, but Marmite is good too, but the others sheesh don't get me started..

I'm a life long lover of Marmite.
My children were brought up as Marmitekids and now my Grandson (aged 15 months) is adicted to Marmite soldiers
